Empowers Believers; Reaches the Community and Beyond

Norval Brown

Rev, Doctor Norval Brown

On 17 June each year, Methodists celebrate the anniversary of the birth of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement. Family and friends of Norval I. Brown also celebrate the anniversary of his birth, but it is usually a much more subdued observance.

Norval I. Brown was born on 17 June 1954, the 251st anniversary of the birth of John Wesley. He was raised in the rural farming community of Brandywine, MD, approximately 25 miles southeast of Washington, DC. Baptized as an infant, he is the product of loving parents and a loving congregation who heard a call to ministry for him at an early age. Answering an invitation to Christian discipleship at the age of 9, he began to take responsibility for the life in Christ that was his that began at his baptism. Norval was active not only in the life of the Church, but also athletics and other extra-curricular activities at school, as well as 4H.

Norval’s education includes a BA from The University of Chicago, Master of Divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, and Doctor of Ministry from Chicago Theological Seminary. He holds a certificate in spiritual direction from The Claret Center in Chicago and has been involved in The Academy for Spiritual Formation (a two year program of The Upper Room) as a participant, faculty presenter and member of the leadership team. Norval is an oblate at St. Benedict’s Abbey in Peoria, IL and he serves on the Advisory Board of the Portiuncula Center for Prayer in Frankfort, IL. He brings gifts in spiritual formation to the Church as he is called to lead retreats, revivals, and individual spiritual direction.

Norval’s pastoral experience is as extensive as it is varied. He has served large parishes and small parishes; African-American, predominantly Anglo and multi-racial; urban and suburban. He has served as a campus minister and an adjunct faculty member at Chicago Theological Seminary.

Norval is married to Andrea Lynette Brookins, aka Gorgeous, and they are the parents of four children and a yorkie and grandparents of the two cutest grandchildren the world has ever seen. They reside in Homewood, IL.
